        中国工程院医药卫生工程学部院士、著名呼吸内科专家、教授、国家级有突出贡献专家（1984）、呼吸内科博士研究生导师、中央领导保健医生、现任广州呼吸疾病研究所所长、中华医学会会长。钟南山院士是近十几年推动我国呼吸疾病科研和临床医疗走向世界前列的杰出领头人之一。他重点研究支气管哮喘和气道高反应性的关系 ，证实并发展了“隐匿型哮喘”的概念，并在世界卫生组织撰写的《哮喘全球防治战略》一书中多次被引用 。他建立了简化的慢性不明原因咳嗽诊断流程，使86%患者获得确诊及有效治疗。他研究呼吸衰竭与呼吸肌疲劳的关系，在国内外首创递增式极量运动过程中同步动态监测及隔肌功能的方法，并研制了专利产品—微机膈肌功能测定仪，探讨了无创通气恢复膈肌力量的途径 ，采用“呼吸肌休息”疗法，使67%慢性阻塞性肺病患者获得显著改善。他从事慢阻肺及肺心病人营养状态及营养疗法 ，首次提出我国COPD病人60%存在蛋白—能量型营养不良，率先总结出肺通气功能与能量消耗的关系，制定了中国人的基础耗能校正公式。他领导制定了全国哮喘及慢性阻塞性肺疾病的诊治指南，指导并参加了全国肺栓塞、社区获得性肺炎、流感、睡眠呼吸紊乱的诊治指南和肺癌化疗指南的制订。主持和参与众多国际合作课题, 国家攻关课题、国家自然科学基金课题、卫生部和广东省自然基金课题；先后有多项科研成果获得国家科技进步奖、卫生部、国家教委、广东省科委等各级别奖项；在国际权威杂志(包括Nature Medicine, Lancet)发表了几十篇论著,培养出大批高水平的博士及博士后。
