Toronto East General Hospital (TEGH) is a large urban community teaching hospital serving a diverse, multi-cultural population of 400,000. TEGH is affiliated with the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine and other educational institutions.

As of January 2008 TEGH has provided 79 years of service to the South East Toronto community.

TEGH provides an extensive range of ambulatory (outpatient), inpatient and community-based programs and services.

Recently, the top countries of origin for the population in TEGH抯 catchment area are:  China, United Kingdom, Greece, Philippines and Pakistan.  The main languages spoken, apart from English, are Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), Greek, and Italian.

Annually, the Hospital provides care for 20,000 inpatients, has over 60,000 emergency visits, 225,000 outpatient visits and delivers nearly 3,500 babies.  TEGH has 470 beds comprised of acute care, rehabilitation and complex continuing care beds.

TEGH is supported by our Volunteer Services program, composed of over 500 adult and student volunteers who participate in all areas of the Hospital, from paediatrics to geriatrics.  Volunteer Services also operates the Hospital抯 convenience and gift shops.

TEGH has 2,500 employees and 400 physicians on staff.

TEGH is organized into several health service areas:

Ambulatory and Community Services
Complex Continuing Care and Short-Term Rehabilitation
Emergency
Maternal/Newborn/Child
Medicine
Mental Health
Pharmacy
Surgery
Diagnostic Imaging
Laboratory Medicine
TEGH is a founding partner and key supporter of Partners for Health (PFH) and a member of Solutions - East Toronto's Health Collaborative.  Through these networks, the hospital works with a wide range of health, community support agencies and consumers to achieve improved coordination and access to health services for residents of South East Toronto.

TEGH is a designated Paediatric Centre for South East Toronto for maternal, newborn and paediatric care and a partner hospital in the Child Health Network of the Greater Toronto area.  TEGH抯 Emergency Paediatric area has been formally affiliated with The Hospital for Sick Children since 2004.

TEGH is proud of its many achievements and of the new services and facilities that have been developed over the past few years.  Some highlights:

Phase I of TEGH's total redevelopment project was implemented in April 2007 when the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care approved an investment of $6.7 million which included $3.4 million to expand and renovate the Hospital抯 Emergency Department and Haemotology & Oncology Clinic.

The Progressive Weaning Centre, established to wean patients from mechanical ventilation in a post-ICU setting, was the first of its kind in Ontario and was declared a Provincial Centre of Excellence during 2007.

The Dialysis Program, opened 6 new stations in November 2006 to increase its capacity to 18 stations. TEGH can now offer haemodialysis close to home for more than 100 patients, 3 times/week. The program is able to serve newly diagnosed patients who live in our catchment area.

The Family Health Centre operates as a multidisciplinary practice and accredited teaching site for the University of Toronto抯 Family & Community Medicine Program.  During 2006, the Family Health Centre was one of the three academic teaching practices in the community to become part of the newly funded South East Toronto Family Health Team (FHT).

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, opened in October 2005, provides services to address the needs of acutely ill children and adolescents.  The program provides inpatient and transitional programs for youth up to 18 years of age with acute mental illnesses and is comprised of three components:  a short stay inpatient unit; a transitional/step-down program; and emergency room mental health supports.

During 2006, TEGH became the first hospital in Canada to win the Canada Award for Excellence (CAE):  Health Care Sector Criteria for outstanding performance in the area of quality and healthy workplace.

In April 2006, as  member of Solutions - East Toronto's Health Collaborative, TEGH was awarded the first ever Minister's Award in Innovation for meeting community needs through integrated care.

The Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Services Unit, provides non-invasive diagnostic testing to over 4,000 patients per year and during 2007 was upgraded to enable the hospital to do MRI breast imaging.
